Youth Services: Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAM MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED?

Summer Library Program materials include reading records, bookmarks, posters, award certificates and doorhangers. These have art work matching the years theme and are provided in the quantities you need for your communitys summer programs. This program is supported by the State Library of Kansas and SEKLS so there is no charge to your library. One manual is also supplied to each library. The manual contains ideas, many you can use in your summer programs, including bulletin board ideas, finger plays, puzzles, crafts, puppets, flannelboards, poems, music, programming ideas, etc. Book bags and other items with the theme artwork are available, a catalog is generally available in the fall and your library can purchase these independently.

WHAT HELP CAN WE RECEIVE FROM THE YOUTH SERVICES CONSULTANT?

The Youth Services Consultant is available to aid member libraries with any issue relating to childrens services. This can include:

  • childrens book selection
  • setting up or arrangement of a childrens room
  • planning programs
  • working with volunteers
  • evaluating the childrens section of your library and suggesting ways to improve it

She encourages all 54 participating public libraries to offer full service to children, to include

  1. a book collection of both quality and quantity to serve the needs of all the children in the community, and
  2. regular programming.

WHAT IS THE SUMMER PERFORMERS TOUR?

Each summer, SEKLS coordinates a performers visit to participating SEKLS libraries. Libraries pay the performers fee (typically $100-$150), while SEKLS pays the performers travel expenses and coordinates the scheduling. Planning for the performer tour starts in the fall, if your library is interested in participating, contact Sandra Wilkerson.

HOW CAN THE MANUAL BE USED?

Copyright restrictions largely determine this. It may be used by librarians or volunteers helping with the Summer Library Program in your Public Library. It may not be checked out to patrons. For permission to reproduce materials for any reason other than the Summer Library Program, contact the youth services consultant for the CSLP information.

HOW DO WE GET INVOLVED IN THE SUMMER LIBRARY PROGRAM?

Each fall, SEKLS will send out information for you to return showing how many of each item you want for the following summers program. These arrive the following spring. We generally have a workshop in the spring to suggest ways to implement the summer program in your library. Please contact the youth services consultant if you have questions about participation in the summer program.
